Male City Council temporarily halted issuing of construction permits on Sunday, after a young girl was left in critical condition when a bag of cement fell on top of her at a construction site.
Speaking at a press conference, Male City Council's Mayor Shifa Mohamed stated that the council had had meetings planned with construction firms at the time of the incident.
She stated that the council has decided to withhold construction permits over the accident, and shared that the council has so far noted several safety issues at construction sites in the capital.
The mayor assured that the council will discuss safety concerns with construction firms and come up with the necessary solutions.
Shifa added that Male City Council will resume issuing construction permits after the meetings.
