A recent amendment to the Environment Ministry's regulations have put stringent punitive measures on unpermitted or illegal water pumping off of construction or other industrial sites.
According to the ministry, with the recent change, offenders are looking to a fine of up to MVR 40,000 per day for the duration of the offense carried out. Offenders who pump water off industrial or construction sites exceeding the permitted limit will face the aforementioned fine for each day of the permit's excess.
The highest chargeable amount as a fine under the amendment is MVR 1 million.
If parties pump water off site without a permit, after which they sought permission; the parties will be fined for the days it had pumped water off site prior to acquiring the permit. Additionally, the permit will be issued only after the offenders have settled their fines.
