President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, decided to extend the protected area of Thanburudhoo lagoon to include Thanburudhoo Island, an eco-rich site in Kaafu Atoll with naturally unique features and diverse surroundings.

The president reached the decision based on the recommendation of the cabinet, following deliberations on documents presented by the Ministry of Environment.

A technical survey report by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) concerning the unique features of Thanburudhoo Island and a paper compiled by the Maldives Surfing Association (MSA), titled ‘Thanburudhoo Island as a Natural Heritage’, were presented during Thursday's virtual cabinet meeting.

Including 11 sites in Kaafu Atoll, the incumbent administration has thus far declared 24 sites across seven atolls as protected areas under Article 4 of the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act of Maldives (Act No: 4/93).

Designating at least one island, one reef and one mangrove, in each atoll, as a protected area is one of President Solih’s pledges.
