President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that efforts will be made to make the 50-room guesthouse "Casa Mia", operated by former Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, available for the benefit of the residents of Alifu Alifu Mathiveri.

During a meeting with the Mathiveri Island Council as part of his tour of Alifu Alifu Atoll, the council raised concerns about the property.

They said that the land where Casa Mia was situated has not provided any benefits to the island for the past eight years.

President Muizzu assured residents that action would be taken to address the issue.

“Local tourism was previously significantly benefitted Mathiveri, but it has stopped since. The land was allocated unfairly through the Ministry of Tourism. I have asked the Attorney General to explore legal remedies to resolve this matter,” President Muizzu said.

The President further assured that the agreement would be terminated in compliance with the law and the land would be handed over to operate for the benefit of the community.

Residents and the council have previously voiced concerns about unpaid salaries to Casa Mia employees and overdue land rent exceeding MVR 4 million.

In April 2019, a fire broke out in one of the guesthouse rooms before it was officially operational. Some residents alleged the blaze was deliberately set, leading to protests against Jabir’s entry on the island.
