Male' City Council said that Galolhu Park had been closed for redevelopment, but no progress had been made on the project for years. The park became a frequent gathering spot for individuals who abuse drugs, with continuous public complaints regarding the area.
The council has now taken steps to address the issue, removing the tin barriers around the park and cleaning up the area.
Galolhu Park, originally opened about 15 years ago as a children’s playground, later hosted two restaurants on its premises. However, the restaurants were vacated to facilitate the park's redevelopment.
As part of Maldives’ 50th Independence Day celebrations, "LED parks" were established on the site. Despite these efforts, the park fell into neglect due to a lack of maintenance, leaving it in a state of disrepair.
