Maldives has observed a decline in tourist arrival rates from the past month. May recorded a 30 percent decrease in tourist arrivals compared to April this year with May statistics also indicating a one percent decrease from May last year.

This is a typical occurrence this time of year with arrival rates once again rising in the month of July.
Statistics disclosed by the Ministry of Tourism reveals that the country had observed 119,000 tourist arrivals last month. This a decline from the previous year which saw a number of 120,000 tourist arrivals during May.
Moreover, the arrivals recorded on May this year also indicates a decline from the previous month of April by nearly 30 percent, with a difference of around 50,000 tourists. The country had received a stream of 168,000 tourist visits on April this year.
The first of May saw 3,700 tourist arrivals into Maldives, which is a 4 percent decrease from the previous year.
The country typically observes a decline in tourist arrival rates during May and June as evident from the past two years.
The largest number of tourist arrival rates recorded this year was on February with a stream of 217,000 tourist arrivals into Maldives. The first four months of this year had also observed a monthly average of over 150,000 tourist arrivals.
A total of 895,000 tourist visits into the country has been recorded so far in 2024.
In light of the tourist arrival rates this year, chances of Maldives reaching 1 million arrivals by the end of June is considerably high. The government aims to attract over 2 million tourists into the country by the end of the year, with the Ministry of Tourism aiming for a higher target of 2.3 million annual tourists.
