Telecom company Dhiraagu and local NGO Women in Tech Maldives on Wednesday opened registrations for their second iteration of 'Girls to Code', a programme to teach coding for girls and young women.

The two-month virtual workshop will be conducted in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, for females between the ages of 14 and 20, from January 10, 2021.

First announced on December 16, 'Girls to Code - Thinadhoo' aims to increase interest and inclusion of women in coding and the field of technology. Geared towards individuals without any previous experience in coding, the programme is free for participation and will be held virtually.

According to Dhiraagu and Women in Tech, participants will learn to design and develop websites through HTML, CSS and JavaScript programming.

Noting that female presence is scarce in the technology sector, Women in Tech declared that programmes such as Girls to Code are vital to cultivate interest among young women and introduce them into the field.

Dhiraagu stated that empowering young women in the technology sector is a special priority under the company's corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

Interested participants are invited to register for Girls to Code - Thinadhoo at https://bit.ly/girlstocodemv. The registration deadline expires on December 25, 2020.

The first Girls to Code programme was held in Fuvahmulah last year, which was completed by 16 individuals. Dhiraagu and Women in Tech disclosed that based on the results, there were plans to conduct workshops on coding and web development in more islands in the future.
