Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal has said that he does not accept the decisions made by the Volleyball Association of Maldives regarding its election.

On the February 3, VAM announced the election of the President and eight other positions of the Executive committee (Exco) for the remaining one year of the current term.

Three days later, the Sports Commission sent a letter to the VAM, directing the Olympic Committee and Sports Council to meet with the current VAM Exco to reach an agreement.

However, VAM did not hold the directed meeting with the agencies nor did it halt any election-related preparatory work.

The election was earlier scheduled to be held tomorrow, March 15. However, in a congress meeting held last Monday, a decision was reached to postpone the election for next Tuesday, March 19. VAM has also already announced the names of the candidates last week on Tuesday.

Tholal reiterated that he would not accept these decisions.

According to the existing laws, the Sports Commissioner is the guardian of sports association and clubs. However, representatives of the Sports Commissioner’s Office were not present to even observe the congress held on Monday.

Under VAM’s new governing regulations, there must be fifteen members in the Exco. The existing Exco only has six members. When the remaining nine posts were announced, only one candidate applied for each post. Mohamed Latheef, who was President of the Association from 2016 to 2021, is also the only candidate who applied for the post of President.
