Mother found guilty of murdering daughter, next of kin rejects blood money

Family of four year old child who was murdered by her mother says they do not want blood money or to sentence the mother to death despite the fact the woman was found guilty of the crime.

The child was murdered in Shaviyani atoll Noomaraa six years ago by stabbing. Aminath Shahid from Funadhoo, another island in the same atoll, had killed her daughter in February of 2016. The woman was charged with intentional homicide.

After conducting the hearings to this case in secrecy for six years, Criminal Court had decided that Aiminath had killed her daughter on May 22.

At the hearing on Wednesday to get the stand of the child's next of kin, they said they did not want blood money or to ask for the death sentence of Aiminath.

The court did not disclose who the next of kin to the child was.

The state and the court then spoke at court regarding the punishment the woman should be sentenced to.

The next hearing, schedules for June 6, will be to impose the sentence on Aiminath.
