The Maldives National Party’s (MNP) President Mohamed Nazim has won the party’s presidential ticket by default.
According to party guidelines, if no other candidacies are submitted before the deadline, the candidate who submitted their candidacy automatically wins the party's presidential ticket, without a primary.
The party opened applications on 1 December, 2022, and the deadline closed at 2:00 P.M. on 14 December, 2022.
MNP Spokesperson Sidhatha Shareef confirmed that no other candidates had put forward candidacies when the deadline closed.
Their presidential campaign for the 2023 election will begin once the presidential ticket is officially handed over to Nazim, she added.
MNP is the newest political party registered in the Maldives. According to the Elections Commission, the party currently has 10,424 members. They have three representatives in the parliament, including the party’s President, Nazim who represents Dhangethi constituency. The former Police Commissioner and the party’s Vice President Abdulla Riyaz represents Thimarafushi constituency while the former Deputy Prosecutor General and Vice President of the party Ahmed Usham represents Villimalé constituency.
MNP is currently running a programme to increase membership and expand the party by visiting local islands; the party's Women's Wing is at the forefront of this campaign.
