PG appointment: Abbas' name sent to committee

Parliament has sent President's Office Legal Secretary Abbas Shareef's name to the Judiciary Committee for further review.

Parliament has sent President's Office Legal Secretary Abbas Shareef's name to the Judiciary Committee for further review.

Shareef's name was submitted to parliament by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for appointment to the post of Prosecutor General.

In tonight's extraordinary parliamentary sitting, Secretary General Fathimath Niusha read out the letter submitted by President Muizzu with his nominations for the post. The letter said that the President proposes the name of Abbas Shareef alone for the position of Prosecutor General.

The letter also listed the names of other persons who had applied for the post. They are:

1. Mariyam Nihayath, M. Thaaju

2. Ahmed Hailam, Oceanlead, S. Hithadhoo

3. Ali Sameer, Ma. Wayside 610 flat

4. Ahmed Yamin, H. Delhi-ge

5. Ibrahim Ali, Hulhumale' Hiya 02-13-6

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla sent the motion to the Judiciary Committee for review.

The Judiciary Committee has scheduled a meeting for 21:30 hrs tonight to decide on the matter.

Ruling People's National Congress had submitted a motion to hold the first extraordinary sitting of the 20th Parliament with signatures of fifty parliamentarians.

In addition to receiving President's nominee for the post of Prosecutor General, proposal of an amendment by the government to the Company Act is also scheduled on tonight's agenda.

The Speaker announced that an additional sitting will be held tomorrow.
