Maldivian attempting to smuggle drugs arrested in India

Local attempting to smuggle a copious amount of drugs into Maldives was arrested from India’s Cochin International Airport on Tuesday.

According to Indian media, Mohamed Sobah, aged 32 was arrested while attempting to return to Maldives on Indigo flight 1787.

Sobah who is from Villingili, Gaafu Alif Atoll was taken into custody after his carryon bag was examined.

Upon examination, 3.12kg of Hashish oil and drugs worth MVR 21.9 million was found, reported Indian media.

Indian Police suspect that Sobah, who entered India three days prior to his arrest, belongs to a drug network as the hashish oil seized was alleged by reports to be from Bahrain.

Indian Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said that it is necessary for them to investigate where Sobah attained the drugs. The drugs were handed over to Customs’ Laboratory for further inspection.

The case will be further investigated by India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
