The government of Maldives has allocated MVR 8 million towards the coastal protection of Rasdhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll, from the grant assistance provided by India.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the project will protect an area of 179 metres facing severe coastal erosion.

Formerly used as a landfill, waste buried throughout the area had surfaced due to erosion, contaminating water resources and polluting the coastline.

India provides USD 6.9 million (MVR 100 million) as grant assistance granted to Maldives, during the visit of Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj in March.

The aim of the grant assistance is to conduct high-impact socio-economic development projects across the country.

In April, 2019, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with members of the Rasdhoo Island Council.

During the meeting, council members conveyed the difficulties faced by natives due to the coastal erosion.

Moreover, they highlighted the need to adequately develop the island hospital and to establish a ferry terminal.
