Trial of former PG Shameem's attack begins in Criminal Court

The trial began today with six out of the seven accused individuals present at court.

The trial of the six out of the seven men who are accused of attacking former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has begun at the Criminal Court today.

The attack on Shameem took place last Feburary. He was attacked near his residence with a hammer, after being watched.

The seven men accused in the case are Shamaal Hussain (21), Zayan Naseer (23), Abaan Abdul Hannaan (23), Rajuwan Latheef (22), Midhuhath Adam (24), Mohamed Jazlaan (22) and Ahmed Maisan Hashim (20). They all stand accused of attempted intentional murder.

During today's hearing, all six individuals requested time to appoint lawyers. As such, presiding judge Ibrahim Ihusan granted them ten days to arrange their legal representatives.

Two out of the six also claimed that they were not provided with medical attention while in custody. The judge ordered prosecutors to look into matter.

Among the seven, Misan was not present at court, due to which his trial could not begin. The court revealed that it his absence from court was due to an administrative error made by police.

All seven individuals remain held in remand pending the outcome of their trial.
