The 'Welcome' monument built at Velana International Airport has been unveiled today.

The monument is placed in an island on the road as vehicles come onto the airport from the Sinamale' Bridge. The monument has the VIA name board, over which is a large clock showing local time. The monument also showcases stone masonry artwork as does the new terminal.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) built the monument which was unveiled this morning by their CEO and MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed and Deputy Managing Directors Mohamed Lam'aan and Mujuthaba Latheef.

Part of the new terminal of Velana International Airport is due for completion by November, and MACL is in the process of making arrangements to commence services there. The entire terminal is scheduled for completion by late next year.

Government has sourced USD 100 million from the Saudi Fund for Development and USD 80 million from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to expedite the project.

The new terminal will build the capacity to cater to approximately 7.5 million passengers. It will also create 1800 new jobs. It will also allow for accommodation of services from more airlines than the 30 that are currently in service.
