The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) opens opportunity for interested third-parties to propose solutions in developing tourism sector under the Climate Adaptation Project in the Maldives.
The Climate Adaptation Project, launched by the USAID through the Tetra Tech partnership in August 2021, aims to build capacity of the private sector, civil society, and government "to respond and adapt to climate change" in sustainable, inclusive approaches promoting market-based growth.
The project will help USAID and affiliated bodies to identify and scale-up innovative solutions to climate related challenges, strengthen governance to address climate related risks.
In addition to this, the project aims to work progressively work in improving access to high-quality information for decision-making and reduce vulnerability towards climate change.
For a country such as the Maldives, USAID posits the importance for sustainable solutions and ways on continuing the tourism sector with climate threats which include; rising sea levels, coastal storms and erosions, and coral destruction.
USAID notifies that all qualified organizations, NGOs, community-based organizations as well as private sector organizations operating in the Maldives are eligible to participate in the program to offer solutions.
The participation follows two stages; first, concept of acclimating tourism to climate threats must be submitted before the end of August, and second, selected individuals from proposed concepts must then submit an application form before July 2023.
USAID encourages participation of local government authorities and private sector partnerships; such as local island councils and women's development committees.
As part of the program, USAID will provide funds for development of the best concepts which meet the agency's standards.
A total of five grants between USD50,000 to USD200,000 for a period of two years will be awarded to the finalized concept applicants.
