Maldives Police Service, on Monday, revealed that crime rates increased over the year's third quarter, with a total of 2,171 cases reported between July and September.
According to the police, a total of 3,380 crimes were reported to the police during the first quarter, while 1,331 reports were received in the second quarter.
Overall, crime statistics for 2020 show that theft and robbery accounted for the highest number of crimes reported, with 1,131 cases lodged in the first quarter, 566 in the second quarter and 893 in the third quarter.
Drug related-offences represented the second most commonly reported type of crime, with the police confirming reports on 400 cases in the first quarter. A total of 291 and 340 reports were submitted to the police in the second and third quarters respectively.
Furthermore, the police revealed that criminal activities in Maldives were consistently centred in city areas throughout 2020.
While 74 percent of crimes in the first quarter were reported from the Greater Male' Region, 62 percent of reported crimes in the second quarter were also from across Male' City.
During the third quarter, 70 percent of crimes reported in Maldives were focused within the capital city region.
