Maldives Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the average life expectancy of women is longer than that of a man in the Maldives.

Speaking at the Maldives Finance Forum organized by Maldives Pension Administration Office (MPAO) yesterday, Chief Statistician of Maldives Bureau of Statistics Aishath Hassan revealed during her presentation that the latest statistics has found that the median age of the Maldivian population is now 80 years. In review of these numbers, the average lifespan of a woman transcends that of a man by nearly seven years, she elaborated.

Although recent numbers have revealed as such, Maldivian men had previously lived longer than Maldivian women before 1995.

Statistics also indicate that the rate of child birth has observed a notable decline since 2013, with the most recent census discovering that the rate of childbearing has decreased to 1.7 children. Meanwhile the number of youth mortality due to illnesses such as strokes and cancer has also increased since 2019.

"The most recent statistics show that 50 percent of the Maldivian population is dominated by those under 30 years of age. This is also a sign of a rising elderly community." said Aishath.

While statistics reflect that the life expectancy of women is greater than men, the country's elderly population has also been rising exponentially, with statistics indicating a population dominated by the senior citizens by 2054.

The Bureau further predicts that 43 percent of the Maldivian populace will be dominated by expatriates come 2054, with four out of ten people in the population marked by foreigners.

Statistics also estimate that 64 percent of the country's total population will gather in the Greater Male' region.
