The parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions has decided to postpone the parliamentary election after Ramadan.
According to the calendar, the Hijri month of Ramadan coincides with March 10, 2024.
After citing difficulties in hiring officials and campaign activities, Elections Commission (EC) sought a solution through the committee.
EC proposed two solutions, one included shortening the legally allowed 30-day period for campaigning to 20 days which would conclude all campaign efforts two days before Ramadan.
The second solution proposed extending the 120 days prescribed in the law to 140 days in electing parliamentarians, which EC said would facilitate for preponing election efforts.
All members of the Committee on Independent Institutions coincided on holding the parliamentary elections after Ramadan during its meeting on Sunday, November 26.
Baarah MP Ahmed Abdulla and Central-Henveiru MP Ali Azim said that EC would have the legally facilitated 30-day period even after Ramadan.
The members of the committee unanimously agreed to hold the parliamentary election at the earliest convenient date after Ramadan.
