President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, ratified amendments to three pieces of legislation; the Anti Corruption Commission Act, Civil Service Act and Elections Commission Act.
The first amendment to the Anti Corruption Commission Act ensures added safeguards to protect the watchdog from corruption by mandating all appointees to publish their asset declaration and ensuring that individuals cannot unduly benefit from their position or abuse their influence.
Passed by the Parliament at the 33rd sitting of its second session, the ACC Act amendment also outlines clear ethical guidelines that members must abide by.
The fifth amendment to the Civil Service Act alters the responsibilities of the Civil Service Commission (CSC)'s president and members.
Moreover, the amendment prohibits them from engaging in employment outside of the Commission during their tenure, as well as participating in any activity that would result in a conflict of interest.
Furthermore, the Act sets conditions on maintaining records of CSC's meeting and obligates members to submit their asset declaration statements.
President Solih also ratified the first amendment to the Elections Commission Act, which grants more independence to the institution and mandates commission members to act professionally and impartially in an official capacity.
All the aforementioned amendments were approved during the Parliament sitting held on September 6, 2020. They are effective immediately and have been published in the Government Gazette upon ratification.
