The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions commenced investigations on Tuesday, into the members of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) of the Maldives.
Thus far, the committee has not revealed the nature of the investigations. However, certain cases involving some of the members of CSC were discussed at a meeting held by the Sub Committee 3, which falls under the Independent Institutions Committee, on Tuesday.
At present, CSC members comprise of President Dr Ali Shameem, Vice President Shaheed Mohamed as well as members Fathimath Aamiraa, Ibrahim Shaheeq and Zakariyya Hussain.
Members of CSC were previously summoned by the committee over the dubious appointment of unqualified individuals to certain posts.
Reports accusing the Civil Service Commission, among other independent institutions, of being partial towards specific individuals were commonplace during the administration of former President Yaameen Abdul Gayoom. Allegedly, at the time a number of civil servants were required under duress, to attend political gatherings held by the then-ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
The current administration has taken a number of precautionary measures to tackle corruption including the recent passing of the Whistle-blower Protection Act.
