Several people employed in the civil service protested in front of Velanaage, the government office complex in Malé, on Tuesday over parking inconveniences.

Parking in front of the building on Ameer Ahmed Magu is not permitted; however, due to a lack of space in that area, a lot of people who work in the building park their vehicles there. On February 12, the traffic police gave tickets to all the vehicles parked in front of the building during official hours. The employees were outraged, but they stopped parking opposite Velanaage to avoid being fined.

This morning, when the civil servants went to work, the small parking area between Velanaage and Dharumavantha School was sealed off. They were not given prior notice or an alternative area for parking.

One of the protestors told Mihaaru News that they want to bring this matter to the attention of the relevant authorities. The lack of space for parking spaces, and not being informed of these changes cause massive inconveniences, he said.

Protesting civil servants also gathered near Parliament to air their grievances. The Parliament building is located on Medhuziyaaraiy Magu, the road behind Velanaage.

Malé City Council or the Maldives Police Service have not made any official comments regarding the matter.

The lack of parking spaces near Velaanaage has been a persistent issue. There are many other offices in that area, including the President’s Office, the Ministry of Defense, the main branch of the Bank of Maldives, as well as a lot of private offices. After the old Huravee Building opposite Velanaage was demolished, the building area and the road behind it, which was used as a parking lot by these employees, were refurbished as a park.
