Maldives Civil Court has ordered a travel ban on locally renowned businessman and politician Ahmed Siyam Mohamed following conflict between his Sun Travel and Hilton, Mihaaru news reports.

Siyam's Sun Travel owes over USD28 million to Hilton International after the former had terminated the agreement between the parties granting Hilton the authority to manage Noonu atoll Irufushi.

In addition to Siyam, the court ordered a travel ban on his former wife and the second director of Sun Group, Ms. Aishath Faiz, earlier on 09th February.

Meanwhile, Maldives Immigration has not provided any official statement regarding the matter.

The case so far

Sun Travel entered into a formal agreement with Hilton International for the management of "Irufushi Beach Resort and Spa" on 27th February 2009.

On 30th April 2013, Sun Travel terminated the agreement alleging that Hilton International had breached the provisions of their contract.

Following Sun Travel's decision of untimely termination of the contract, the case was lodged at the international arbitration court by Hilton.

The arbitration court on 17th August 2015 ruled in favor of Hilton International, demanding from Sun Travel to settle USD24 million in damages.

Hilton International had then provided the arbitration court's judgment to Maldives Civil Court, after which the court had ordered to freeze all the corporate accounts of Sun Travel in August 2020.
