Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s leader and former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom appealed the verdicts by the lower court and appeal court, which ordered him to hand over party control to his half-brother and incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, at the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Following the ugly public fall-out between the elder Gayoom and president Yameen which had divided PPM into two factions, the civil lawsuit was filed against Maumoon by two lawmakers loyal to president Yameen, accusing the elder Gayoom of violating the party charter and impeding its effective functioning. The Civil Court had ruled that Gayoom hand over party control to the president.

An individual member of PPM had appealed the case at the High Court which upheld the lower court's verdict on Sunday.

PPM announced on its official Twitter account that Gayoom’s faction filed the appeal at the Supreme Court early Tuesday. According to court regulations, Supreme Court judges will decide to accept or reject the case.

The lower court’s verdict had given rise to two councils in PPM, one from each faction. The councils are electing members for party positions, both declaring that their faction is the “real PPM”.
