Criminal court has ordered the remand in custody of Irfan Thagiyyu, who was accused of smuggling 72-kg of drugs into the country after the Supreme Court revoked his release order.

After detaining Irfan under allegations of trafficking 72-kg of drugs into the country via sea passage, he was released from remand late last year. Supreme Court had subsequently passed an order stipulating that this was against the law.

Irfan was once more placed in custody after the State appealed his remand consequent to the ruling of the Supreme Court.

In light of Irfan's release, Supreme Court had also strengthened the current policy of reviewing remand of detainees, enforcing stricter terms within which expression of opinion on evidence provided for the original trial amidst the bail of detainees has been prohibited.

Additional individuals were also accused in relation to this case. However, Maldives Police Service accuses Irufaan of having led the operation.
