Permission to operate night markets will now be issued by the Ministry of Economic Development.
Previously, the authority to grant permits for night markets and street markets rested with City and Island Councils.
The regulation, officially announced on September 26, have undergone six amendments.
Under the new policy, permits for fairs, night markets, or street markets will be exclusively issued by the ministry.
The policy has been amended to make it mandatory for applicants to apply for a night market through an online form. Additionally, the ministry is required to inform the applicant about their decision within five days of receiving the permission request.
The policy states that, sale of imported goods will be allowed in the market in connection with festivals.
The ministry has the right to withhold permits or revoke previously issued permits in case of non-compliance with the regulations outlined in the market conduct policy.
