National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) announced on Wednesday night that Male' City Council was currently attempting to reopen the local fish market.
Speaking at the press conference hosted by NEOC, President's Office's Undersecretary Mabrouq Abdul Azeez stated that fishermen were facing several difficulties due to the local fish market being closed since the Greater Male' area was placed under lockdown since April 15.
Noting that these difficulties were taken into account, Mabrouq added that attempts were currently underway to establish certain policies and guidelines on how to best utilise the market.
"City Council will soon publicise policies regarding this matter", he said.
As many have raised concerns over the difficulty in purchasing raw fish amidts the ongoing lockdown and fishermen also face challenges in selling their product, Mabrouq added that the policies announced by the City Council will ease the complications for both parties.
"The purpose is to allow for fishermen to use the fish market and provide a way for them to deliver fish to shops and residences".
Fish delivery is currently carried out in Male' area by various individuals, at rates of MVR 60 to 95 per kilogram.
