Rozaina faces defeat in the MDP primary election

Ahmed Shareef, a former footballer and former Technical Director of the FAM secured the ticket for the North Feydhoo constituency.

Rozaina Adam, who contested the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary elections held today to determine candidates for the upcoming parliamentary election, has suffered defeat.

Rozaina contested for the North Feydhoo constituency.

Rozaina, the current MP for Addu Meedhoo constituency, and two other candidates contested for the newly formed constituency. Despite being one of the strongest female MDP members, Rozaina faced defeat in both the Male' and Addu City boxes.

Ahmed Shareef (Dunga) secured the ticket for the North Feydhoo constituency. Shareef is a former footballer and the former Technical Director of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

Rozaina, who has been a former parliamentarian for the Thulusdhoo constituency, was elected as MP from Addu Meedhoo constituency in 2014. In the next parliamentary election that followed, Rozaina defended her seat in 2019. She is the first female member of parliament from Addu.

MDP held primaries in 40 out of the 93 constituencies for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for March 17. A total of 149 candidates contested for the party ticket in these constituencies, with eligible voters totaling 25,325.

In the remaining 53 constituencies, there are no candidates contesting for the Eydhafushi and Nilandhoo seats.

With no additional candidates contesting, tickets for 51 constituencies have been secured. These include current members of parliament and former senior government officials.
