Annual arrivals increase by 47.1 percent, exceeds 620k

According to the latest update from Ministry of Tourism, the annual arrivals to Maldives increased by 47.1 percent as of 11th May 2022.

Moreover, statistics confirm the tourist arrivals to the island nation has currently reached 628,709 in annual terms.

The total tourist arrivals to Maldives from 01st until 11th May was recorded at 51,919 which is an 80.2 percent improvement when compared with the same period in 2021 during which arrivals stood at 28,809.

In addition to this, arrivals for the review period was also up by 25.4 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019 during which it was recorded at 41,399.

Annually, tourist arrivals were recorded at 481,579 from January until 11th May 2021. On the other hand, tourist arrivals during the same period in 2019 was recorded at 687,491.

Meanwhile, United Kingdom continues to dominate the top source market spot with an annual arrival count of 80,102 which is 12.7 percent of the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

On the other hand, India is currently the second strongest source market with an annual arrival total of 79,562 which is also a 12.7 percent from the total tourist arrivals to the island nation.

Russia is currently the third strongest source market with 60,533 annual arrivals with a share of 9.6 percent and Germany is ranked fourth with an annual total of 54,006 which translates to 8.6 percent of the total arrivals.

The Maldivian tourism industry currently boasts of 164 tourist resorts at operational capacity while a total of 659 guesthouses and hotels are currently operating.

So far a total of 22 international airlines operate to the Maldives which includes globally renowned carriers such as British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways among several others.

Furthermore, Russia's national carrier Aeroflot recently recommenced its direct flights to the Maldives after two months of discontinuation.

This recommencement will likely drive up tourist arrivals from Russia once again, reports the ministry.
