The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) stated Wednesday that the majority of cases currently being investigated involve the violation of children’s rights.
In a statement released on the occasion of Children’s Day, HRCM disclosed that it has received cases involving child abuse at home, social ostracisation of children, issues in guardianship, and lack of state protection and security for children.
HRCM added that cases filed at other institutions also include a number of issues related to children.
The commission emphasised that care and protection from family, society and the state is a right accorded to children under the Constitution. However, HRCM noted that violation of children’s rights is one of the three major categories of cases filed at the commission last year.
The statement called on the government of the Maldives to review and strengthen the laws on children’s rights to protect them, and prevent abuse and neglect.
