Criminal Court sentences foreigner that had sexually abused a minor to jail for 17 years.

Information relating to the case involving Bangladeshi man Shuva Chandura Shil has not been disclosed by any authority. The abuse had taken in 2020.

As the Maldivian laws protect the identities of minors in cases relating to sexual abuse, any information that may help identify the child is usually sealed.

In the ruling made on June 14, the court had sentenced the man to 14 years in jail for touching a minor with sexual intent, and three years for showing his genitals to the minor.

However, once the time he had already spent detained is reduced from his sentence, he will have to serve 13 years and 11 months in jail.
