COVID-19: Kolhufushi placed under monitoring

Authorities, on Sunday, placed Kolhufushi in Meemu Atoll under monitoring after a random sample collected from the island tested positive for COVID-19.

Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, Kolhufushi Council President Hussain Shameem revealed that the positive case was identified out of 111 random samples collected the previous week.

He further stated that 60 additional samples were collected and that some residences were quarantined amid contract tracing efforts.

Kolhufushi was initially placed under monitoring between January 26 and February 11 after a number of individuals were confirmed to have the virus after travelling to the capital city of Male’.

More than 30 residents tested positive during the aforementioned monitoring period.

After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 18,796 virus cases of which 2,506 are active cases, in addition to 16,196 recoveries and 60 deaths.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 112 million people and claimed over 2.4 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 87.3 million people have recovered.
