Criminal Court, on Wednesday, released a sixth suspect charged with supporting terrorist organisations.

Hassan Razee, released by the court, was arrested in a special operation conducted by Maldives Police Service in Raa Atoll's Maduvvari during early 2020, amidst rising concern over the spread of religious extremism.

Five other individuals, arrested in the operations along with Raazee, were charged with supporting terrorist organisations. However, the court has now released all of them from state custody.

Raazee's lawyer requested for his release, during Wednesday's hearing, stating that the court had freed the five other suspects arrested on similar charges.

Local media Mihaaru reported that the previously released suspects were freed by the court on the ground that they had been remanded for an excessively long period of time.

Previously, the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) had revealed that the authorities were aware of the islands in which extremism is spreading at a large scale.

According to authorities, extremist beliefs have spread to dangerous levels all across the archipelago within the last 12 years. Commissioner of Police (CP) Mohamed Hameed recently revealed that there are approximately 1400 individuals who would not hesitate to kill for their cause.
