The register of child sex offenders has been digitized and is republished.

Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Aishath Mohamed Didi inaugurated the launching of the Child Sex Offenders Registry. The registry was formulated by the Ministry, with the aid of the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO). The register is also published on the PGO's 'Aamahi' website.

The digitization of the registry allows easier access to more detailed information regarding offenders, their sentences and status.

Since 2018, in accordance with the Law on Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders, the Child and Family Protection Services have been making public the identities of child sex offenders. However, since the data is uploaded manually, the registry has not been kept consistently up to date.

The PGO has said that it will provide technical assistance to the Ministry to ensure the registry is kept updated. They said that court verdicts are immediately shared automatically with the Ministry.

The registry includes the offenders' names, photographs, permanent addresses, and the facility where they are serving their sentence. If an offender is on house arrest, the address where they are restricted in is provided, along with dates when the sentence is due to end.

PG Office said that the information in the registry can be filtered in seven ways. They said that similar to such registries in other developed countries, the registry will allow viewing of offender details through these different filters.

The main aim of digitizing the child sex offender registry is to increase accessibility to the information.

Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi highlighted that the digitization of the registry is an important step taken to protect the rights of child sexual abuse victims and their families.
