A man from Thaa Veymandoo was arrested last year for sexually abusing his own grandchild, however, he has now been released.

The accused was arrested in August last year was granted conditional bail by the Veymandoo magistrate court. He is facing trial for the sexual assault charges.

The victim, a 13-year-old girl, also lives in the same island as him which sparked serious concern on social media.

The Prosecutor General’s Office informed ‘Mihaaru’ that the case will be appealed at the High Court as soon as possible and that the case will be filed at the High Court on Sunday.

Certain investigative statements against the man were also circulated on social media. He allegedly sexually assaulted his granddaughter on three different occasions.

The victim, who happens to be a disabled minor, is believed to have been sexually abused in the house where they both reside. The girl initially confided her story of sexual abuse with a teacher.

Since then, the child also informed her mother of three different incidents of sexual abuse by the perpetrator. The case was also filed at the Ministry of Social and Family Development by her mother.

Child sexual abuse cases are the most common cases reported to the Ministry of Social and Family Development. In the first six months of last year, more than 1,500 cases related to children were reported to the ministry, which involved 144 cases of child sexual abuse.

There is also the law ‘Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sexual Abuse Offenders’ to investigate cases of sexual abuse against children, punish the perpetrators severely and ensure the protection of victims of child abuse.

However, there has always been concern about the release by the courts of those accused in such cases.
