Former Vice Chief Major General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef has been appointed as the Chief of Defense Force on Friday evening, November 17, under the new government led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Following the presidential inauguration of Dr. Muizzu on Friday afternoon, a ceremony was held on Friday evening at the President's Office where members of his cabinet took oath of office.
Major General Abdul Raheem had served in the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) for 37 years.
Despite plans for retirement, Abdul Raheem chose to remain as an active officer of the security forces.
As the leading authority of the MNDF, the Chief of Defense Force is hired or removed from post by the President in his role as the Commander-in-Chief.
Prior to Abdul Raheem, Lieutenant General Abdul Shamaal had served as the Chief of Defense Force.
