Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has called to not involve the police in politics.

His comments come in response to criticism from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) regarding the police investigation into an alleged coup attempt.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry yesterday, Ihusaan emphasized that the investigation is necessary as the public would want to determine whether the call for the overthrowing of a legally elected administration was justified. He said that while an investigation is essential, it does not imply a predetermined outcome.

“The case will be investigated thoroughly, and action will be taken if warranted. If not, the public will be informed,” Ihusaan said.

He criticized calls for the resignation of the police commissioner, urging that the Maldives Police Service should not be drawn into political disputes.

"I strongly urge not to involve the Maldives Police Service in politics. Do not involve such uniformed bodies in political rhetoric, narrative, and discourse," he said.

The minister also explained that the investigation was launched due to a series of coincidental events on the day of the dollar issue, including the decision being made by Bank of Maldives (BML) hours before a scheduled board meeting, calls for public protests from paid services and social media bots, and a press conference held by a political party.

Occurrence of these events at the same time raises questions that warrant investigation, Minister Ihusaan said.
