The Maldives has received its first-ever award at the international culinary competition, the "Young Chef Olympiad," which took place from January 24 to February 4.

Representing the Maldives at the tournament were Mariyam Hashma Samir, a student at the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism at the Maldives National University (MNU), and Alma Aleel, a lecturer at the faculty. This was the sixth time MNU had represented the country at the competition, but the first time they had received an award.

MNU won three awards at this year's competition, including;

- Best Ambassador Award

- Mentor Award and

- Highly Commended Award for Sustainability Presentation

Alma Aleel expressed her happiness, noting that in a competition with participants from 53 countries, the win for the Maldives was significant.

According to Alma Aleel, the Best Ambassador and Mentor Awards at the "Young Chef Olympiad" competition, were given to her and Hashma based on their enthusiasm for career growth in the culinary field as well as their performance in the competition.

The Highly Commended Award for Sustainability Presentation was given for the exhibit created by both Hashma and Alma, which focused on the Maldives' tourism industry and how it contributes to sustainability practices.
