Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has submitted an emergency motion to parliament calling to pay the funds due to fishermen.

Maradhoo constituency MP Ahmed Didi of MDP submitted the emergency motion, which was passed by the unanimous votes of the 74 MPs present.

When submitting the motion, Ahmed Didi said that it is a presidential pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to complete payments to fishermen within 48 hours of purchasing fish from them.

He said that things are not proceeding as such, with fishermen remaining unpaid and struggling to pay debts and utility bills. He said that the economies of islands depending largely on fisheries have come to a halt, and called for a quick resolution to the matter.

"Since last Friday, about 90 percent of Addu, fishermen from approximately 400 families, are protesting and calling to fulfill the pledge," Ahmed Didi said.

The motion urged police to not obstruct fishermen's demonstrations and called on the government for a quick settlement of the overdue payments.

The MP called for a permanent resolution to be found for the issue of fishermen remaining unpaid for their catch.
