Following an emergency meeting held by the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC), the institution reprimanded local broadcast network 'Channel 13' over false information disseminated through its daily political commentary programme 'Madiseela', regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
MBC's ruling barred Channel 13 from broadcasting the programme until the state of public health emergency is lifted. It also restricted Channel 13 from broadcasting any information relating to COVID-19.
Following the show aired on March 19, the commission's investigation concluded that Madiseela created "widespread panic and fear amongst the public". Further, the content was deemed "inaccurate, false and unsubstantiated".
MBC ruled that Channel 13 shall refrain from broadcasting their ‘Madiseela’ programme for the duration of the declared health emergency. It also ruled that Channel 13 shall not broadcast on any of its programmes information relating to Covid-19, other than the information that has been disseminated by the relevant state authorities.
"Channel 13 had failed to observe principles of fair reporting and responsible journalism", said the government.
"MBC’s action was taken in the interest of public safety and well-being in responding to an issue of grave public concern".
This marks the first case of media censorship during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's tenure. Foreign Affairs noted that "the actions taken by MBC in no way impedes on individuals' right to freedom of opinion and expression, nor does it obstruct freedom of the press".
The government called on all media outlets to prevent inducing panic and fear within the community and touched up the importance of being accountable and responsible in their reporting.
