Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has proposed to hold an "extraordinary congress," with the matter now included in the agenda for the party’s National Council meeting scheduled for this Saturday.
According to the agenda, the congress would be held as soon as possible, with a date to be confirmed. The agenda also includes the formation of a committee to oversee administrative matters related to the congress.
While the MDP constitution mandates holding a congress every five years, it allows for an extraordinary congress to be convened within that period if needed.
The party last held its congress in August 2022, which saw the participation of over 1,400 members, including National Council members, mayors, wing presidents, and councillors.
