Maldives records 8.1 percent increase in tourist arrivals

Ministry of Tourism statistics have revealed an 8.1 percent increase in tourist arrivals for the month of July 2018.

According to the ministry's statistics, a total of 122,332 tourist arrivals was recorded during the month of July 2018, which is an 8.1 percent increase from the 113,175 tourist arrivals in July 2017.

Maldives also recorded a 10.1 percent increase in tourist arrivals from January to June 2018, with the total number of arrivals at 848,847 this year in comparison to the 770,715 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

China remains the largest contributor of tourist arrivals to Maldives with a total of 33,227 tourist arrivals in July 2018. However, the figure is a 3.1 percent decline in comparison to the 34,276 tourists from China in July last year.

India is the second highest contributor from the Asian region for last month with a total of 5,694 tourists visiting Maldives, a 5.7 percent increase from the figure at 5,386 during the same month last year.

The statistics further showed Italy following with 4,644 tourist arrivals in July, which is a 25.6 percent increase from the 3,698 visitors in 2017.

France showed a hike of 35 percent in tourist arrivals in July 2018, with 2,043 visitors while only 1,504 tourist arrivals were recorded in July 2017.

According to the statistics, Germany showed the second largest contribution from Europe with a total of 6,932 tourists in the Maldives in July 2018. In 2017, Germany recorded 6,830 tourist arrivals, thus presenting an increase of 1.5 percent in 2018.

UK still remains the top European contributor with a total of 8,421 tourists in July 2018, which is a 9.3 percent increase from the 7,705 tourist arrivals in 2017.
