The United Nations (UN) passed a resolution yesterday, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Moosa Zameer called upon the UN Security Council to ensure full implementation of the resolution and to provide the necessary assistance to the people of Gaza.

The resolution was welcomed by various countries, who urged for its prompt implementation.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated on social media that the UN Security Council should have passed the resolution much earlier.

“We call for the full implementation of this resolution and for Israel to fully abide by it”, he said.

The President also said the ceasefire would finally allow civilians of Gaza to experience the true spirit of Ramadan.

“The international community should aim to pass a permanent ceasefire to end the genocide in Gaza. The world needs to do much more for Palestinians”, he said.

Israel continues to attack Gaza since 7th October 2023, which has also resulted in Palestinians to face starvation. The UN stated that Israel deliberately blocks aid supplies from entering Gaza. Israel plans to launch a military operation against Rafah, the only city where civilians now seek refuge. Several countries have urged Israel not to do so.

Minister Zameer, via X, welcomed the UN Security Council resolution adopted last night and views this resolution as an essential step towards achieving a permanent ceasefire and bringing lasting peace to Gaza.

“This resolution must be fully implemented and the people of Gaza should be provided with the assistance they require immediately”, Zameer said.

Several attempts were made to reach a consensus on a ceasefire resolution in the past. However, some countries were not content with the phrasing of the resolution and it resulted in failure.

Israel’s ally, the United States (US), previously vetoed an earlier resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. However, this time, they abstained from the vote.

The US not using their veto power implies they are dissatisfied with Israel’s massacre of 32,000 innocent Palestinians. Due to their decision to abstain from voting, relations between the two countries have deteriorated.

Israel expressed “disappointment” over the US’ decision and stated that it was supposedly a loss for them in their war against Hamas. They also cancelled their trip to the US to discuss a ceasefire in protest of the US’ decision.

The resolution called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all Israelis held hostage by Hamas.
