W Construction was given permission on Monday to resume work on their sites, which were halted after the tragic death of a young girl who was struck by a falling cement bag at a construction site in December 2018.

State Minister of Ministry of National Planning and Infrasructure, Ahmed Ali, revealed to local media Mihaaru, that W Construction was permitted to resume work on all other sites except Nalahiya Mazil in capital Male, where the incident took place.

He further revealed that the permit to resume work at Nalahiya Manzil was withheld as the investigation was ongoing regarding the death of Rawshan Jian.

“Permission is held off for that site until the investigation report and a report outlining measures taken to prevent similar incidents have been acquired”, Ahmed Ali said.

No actions have been taken against W Construction regarding the death of Rawshan Jian, as the investigation is yet to conclude.

The State Minister explained that W Construction was granted permission to continue work on other sites as those would be on hold for a long time if they were halted until the end of the lengthy Nalahiya Manzil investigation.

Rawshan Jian, the daughter of two Bangladeshi doctors working in Maldives, passed away while being treated for her injuries in the ICU of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Male’ City Council and the Planning Ministry halted construction work in various sites after the incident. At the time, Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MACI) stated that halting work at construction sites was not a solution.

MACI further said that there are construction companies that adhere to the safety guidelines, and all companies should not be punished for the mistake of one contractor.
