An accident took place in Velana International Airport (VIA) early Saturday, when a taxiing airplane hit a parked airliner.

According to an official of the Maldives' main airport, the accident took place around 9:30 a.m., after an Air Asia airplane landed and was taxiing to the apron. Its wing struck a parked Qatar Airways aircraft, damaging the latter's wing.

The Air Asia flight was carrying passengers at the time of the accident, while the Qatar Airways plane was being prepped for boarding. No injuries were reported.

Both airlines stated that they were working to bring substitute airplanes for their outbound flights scheduled for Saturday night.

The two airplanes involved in the accident have been grounded for investigation. An official from Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) stated that further details can only be disclosed after the probe ends.

Meanwhile, an official from Civil Aviation Authority has declared that neither of the airplanes sustained much damage, adding that they would be approved for flight after inspection.
