Opposition lawmaker of Galolhu South constituency, Ahmed Mahloof, on Monday requested Bollywood’s celebrity actor Amitabh Bachchan to boycott his upcoming trip to the Maldives to take part in the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s annual session of the Regional Committee for South-East Asia.

In a series of tweets, MP Mahloof tagged the Indian superstar, saying, “… our leaders are jailed. We are deprived of our constitutional rights & freedom. Please boycott your trip to #Maldives”.

He added that jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb and Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim are being “denied from urgent medical treatment abroad”.

Following Mahloof’s tweet, a number of other Maldivians have also taken to Twitter, urging Bachchan to boycott his visit.

The popular actor is WHO’s Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis in the Southeast Asia Region.

Mihaaru understands that Bachchan is to participate in the WHO Regional Committee meeting which is scheduled for September 6 in Paradise Island Resort. The exact date of his arrival in the Maldives is yet unclear.
