Two more ousted lawmakers have been arrested and remanded in connection to the conflict between security officers and lawmakers last Monday.
The Criminal Court added 15 days to the remand of Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth and Villingili MP Saud Hussain late Friday. Ameeth and Saud are two of six lawmakers that have been declared ousted and no longer holding Parliament seats by the Elections Commission. The duo were arrested for breaking past security forces and breaking into the locked parliament building last Monday though they have been ousted.
Prior to Ameeth and Saud, Police also arrested Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim in the same case. The court remanded Waheed by 15 days last Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the three are of four lawmakers that have filed at the Supreme Court to overthrow the Elections Commission’s decision to oust them. The top court had confirmed last Monday that their cases have been accepted for trial.
There are currently four lawmakers of the opposition coalition under arrest for investigation. In addition to Waheed, Ameeth and Saud, the lawmaker son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Faris Maumoon, has also been detained.
Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon is arrested over allegedly bribing lawmakers to gather support for the opposition lobbied motion of no confidence against the parliament speaker. While the Criminal Court has ordered to keep Faris in custody until the end of his trial, it remains unclear when the investigation would end and trial begin.
