The Maldives has raised concern over the United States' recent decision to veto the resolution seeking immediate ceasefire in Gaza submitted to the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer expressed his concerns during his meeting with the US Ambassador to the Maldives Hugo Yon.

The minister in his post on X, said that he raised concerns about the recent UN Security Council vote on Gaza, and reiterated the Maldivian government's call for an immediate ceasefire and opening of humanitarian aid corridors.

Besides this, the minister had discussed strengthening the Maldives-US cooperation in different areas including defense, trade, and people-to-people ties with Yon.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) submitted the resolution to the UN Security Council, which received backing from 13 out of the 15 Member States of the council.

US was the only Member State to vote against the resolution while the UK did not participate in the voting.

While the US dismissed the resolution with its power to veto, more than 17,487 Palestinians have been killed from multiple attacks by the Israeli armed forces which included over 7,000 children.
