A 29-year-old Bangladeshi national serving time at Maafushi prison for sexual misconduct has passed away.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) on Friday, April 21 said that the inmate, Ameenul Islam was found unresponsive after he had failed to wake up for breakfast.
The authority said he was transferred to Maafushi Health Center where he was pronounced dead at 02:10 a.m. due to sudden cardiac arrest.
Ameenul Islam was serving a seven-year prison sentence for sexual misconduct and had not been receiving treatment for any illnesses at the time of his death, according to the authority.
Correctional Service has since reported the prisoner’s demise to Inspector General of Correctional Service, Maldives Police Service, Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), and the National Integrity Commission.
