Following surge of inmates requiring specialist consultation, Maldives Correctional Service has launched an operation for prisoner checkups.

According to the authority, prison doctors have recommended several of the inmates required specialist consultation and treatment. The consultation operation, dubbed "Heyhan" (Care), was launched to facilitate special medical attention for the inmates who require it.

The special operation will run for a period of three weeks from October 29, Saturday.

Correctional Service confirms the operation will assist in discovering inmates with sensitive health conditions and chronic illnesses, and provide for them correct treatment from medical establishments in Male' City. The operation comes following mounting complaints by prisoners over lack of medical attention provided to them. Many have claimed authorities were negligent in facilitating medical support for inmates, while several of these inmates have been released through court orders due to them not receiving proper treatment while in custody.

Meanwhile, Correctional Service adds the operation will benefit the authority in identifying key areas that require improvement to establish a sustainable specialist treatment process for inmates requiring them. Over 70 of the authority's officers are participating in the operation, while it had discussed with notable medical establishments in Male' City to ensure the operation's success.
